2-year-old dies after accidentally shooting self in Joliet, police say

Officers responded to a home Wednesday morning in the 200 block of South Eastern Avenue and found the wounded child, police say.

A 2-year-old child has died after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound Wednesday morning in suburban Joliet.

Officers responded to a home around 10:30 a.m. in the 200 block of South Eastern Avenue and found the wounded child, Joliet police said.

Investigators determined the boy suffered a gunshot wound to his head after finding a loaded gun in the living room, police said.

The 2-year-old later died at Amita St. Joseph Medical Center, according to police Sgt. Dwayne English, who said the shooting appeared to be accidental.

The gun was legally owned by the boy’s father, who was cooperating with detectives, police said.
