An 18-year-old man was shot and killed Thursday afternoon in north suburban Mundelein, according to police.

Officers responded about 1 p.m. to gunfire in the 300 block of North Lake Street and found a man gravely wounded, Mundelein police said in a statement.

The man, identified as Gavile Jackson of Mundelein, was taken to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville and pronounced dead, according to the Lake County coroner’s office.

Investigators believe he was shot by someone he met for “some type of exchange,” police said. The shooter ran away while someone in another vehicle drove off.

The preliminary results of an autopsy indicated Jackson died of the gunshot wound, but toxicology tests are pending, the coroner’s office said.

Mundelein police and the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force are investigating.
