Man shot to death on I-57

The 25-year-old was driving north when someone fired shots from another vehicle in the northbound lanes of I-57 near Halsted Street, Illinois State Police said.

Two boys, both 17, were shot July 12, 2022, in Austin.

A man was killed in a shooting Tuesday on I-57 near the junction with the Bishop Ford Freeway on the South Side.

The 25-year-old was driving north when someone fired shots from another vehicle at 9:37 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-57 near Halsted Street, according to a statement from Illinois State Police.

Troopers found the man’s vehicle crashed in the grassy embankment between two ramps connecting I-57 and the Bishop Ford, state police said. The man had gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified him as Jaleel Barbee of West Pullman.

I-57 onramps at 111th and Halsted streets were closed for investigation until 11:47 p.m., according to state police. The ramp from northbound I-94 to southbound I-57 were closed until 3:14 a.m. Wednesday.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 847-294-4400.
