A person was killed and another wounded in a shooting Friday in Lawndale on the West Side.

The men, both 20, were in a vehicle that was stopped at a red light about 6:30 p.m. in the 3900 block of West 16th Street when a person approached them on foot and fired shots, Chicago police said.

The driver suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the back and torso and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified him as Jeremiah Fangster.

The other, a passenger in the vehicle, was struck in the leg and was transported to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stable, police said.

After the person opened fire, the driver of the vehicle sped off and crashed into a building, police said. A man who was sitting on the steps of the building was hit by the vehicle.

The man, 65, was taken to Stroget hospital with a broken leg, police said. His condition was stable.

No one was in custody as Area Four detectives investigate.
