A 26-year-old man was pronounced dead after falling from an overpass on the Dan Ryan Expressway following a multi-vehicle crash early Saturday on the South Side.

About 2 a.m., four vehicles collided in the southbound lanes of Interstate 90/94 near 26th Street, according to the Illinois State Police.

David Ponce De Leon, 26, witnessed the crash, pulled over to the shoulder and got out and stood near the passenger side of his car, state police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

A sixth driver then “drove into the area,” swerved around one of the previously crashed vehicles and struck De Leon’s car, which caused him to fall over a concrete wall and onto the roadway below, according to a spokesman for state police.

De Leon was pronounced dead at the scene, fire officials said.

The driver who struck De Leon’s vehicle, a 53-year-old man, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, police said.
