Charlie Weis has described quarterback Jimmy Clausen as football’s version of a gym rat, so it should come as no surprise that he spent part of his Saturday off attending a college football game?Perhaps the bigger question is, Did Clausen sing “Rocky Top?”“I actually went down to the University of Tennessee to see my sister with a couple of guys on the team and we just hung out down there, relaxed, went to the Tennessee game for the first half and then came back and watched the rest of the game on TV,” Clausen said Tuesday.Clausen’s older brothers, Rick and Casey, both played quarterback for the Volunteers. Tennessee was among the numerous schools interested in the high school phenom. The list includes Notre Dame’s opponent this week. Clausen said he visited Seattle and met with Washington coach Tyrone Willingham during the recruiting process.“I went with my dad and watched one of the practices,” Clausen said. “It might have been a spring game or something like that. I was taking trips all around the country and looking at different schools. I was interested [in going to Washington] just like I was a bunch of other schools in the country.”It’s what Clausen didn’t do during the bye week that may prove most instrumental to his second-half success. The freshman, who has taken virtually every snap this season, gave his arm a much-needed rest and let freshman Dayne Crist and backup Evan Sharpley carry more of the load in practice.“During the season, you really don’t have that much time down time,” he said. “You’ve just got to keep going and throwing.”
