Demorrio Williams to visit Bears Tuesday

Adam Caplan of Scout.com and profootballtalk.com reported in the wee hours that linebacker Demorrio Williams would be making a free-agent visit to the Bears.

That information has been confirmed and his itinerary has been nailed down.

Williams is visiting with the Kansas City Chiefs today. He will travel to Tampa Bay where he will meet with the extremely busy Buccaneers on Monday, and Williams is expected to arrive at Halas Hall on Tuesday.

Thats provided he doesnt strike a deal with the Chiefs or Bucs first. Tampa, armed with $44 million in available cap space when free agency, has been one of the leagues busiest teams. The Bucs have already reached agreements with center Jeff Faine and tight end John Gilmore and have several other players lined up for visits.

The Bears liked Williams when he was a fourth-round draft pick from Nebraska by the Atlanta Falcons in 2004. He fits the mold of what they seek in an outside linebacker as someone who is a little undersized at 6-foot, 232 pounds, and moves well. Williams had a terrific second season in 2005 when he made 128 tackles, 100 of them solos, and added three sacks and two interceptions. Like Lance Briggs, the man he could potentially replace, hes shown great durability having played in all 64 games in four seasons.

Williams has not been as productive over the last two seasons with his tackle totals sliding to 93 in 2006 and then to 78 this past season. He certainly would be an economical way to replace Briggs, although the Bears would be expected to allow Jamar Williams to compete for the job also.
