Tom Hanks reveals to David Letterman that he has Type 2 diabetes

In the process of promoting “Captain Philips,” Tom Hanks went on David Letterman’s “The Late Show” Monday night — revealing he’s suffering from Type 2 diabetes.

The actor said his history of gaining and losing weight for film roles may have contributed to his condition. However, he also said he will be able to control it by watching his diet.

Hanks joked to Letterman, “My doctor said, ‘If you can weigh as much as you weighed in high school, you will be essentially healthy and will not have Type 2 diabetes.’

“Then I said to her, ‘Well, I’m gonna have Type 2 diabetes. Because there is no way I can weigh as much as I did in high school.’” That led Letterman to ask, “What did you weigh in high school?”

“I weighed 96-pounds in high school,” quipped Hanks.
