Notre Dame star, local product Tom Zbikowski cut by Bears

The Bears made the first round of cuts on Sunday and among them was safety Tom Zbikowski, a former Notre Dame star and a Buffalo Grove High School product.

Zbikowski had signed a one-year deal with the Bears in March after starting 11 games last season with Colts and the first four years of his career with the Ravens.

Other player released on Sunday included: wide receiver Devin Aromashodu; running back Curtis Brinkley; defensive tackle Eric Foster; offensive tackle A.J. Lindeman; center P.J. Lonergan; safety Derrick Martin; defensive end Kyle Moore; tight end Gabe Miller; tight end Leonard Pope; defensive tackle Brent Russell; linebacker Patrick Trahan; punter Tress Way and linebacker Lawrence Wilson.

Zbikowski saw limited snaps in the preseason and in training camp. He worked primarily with the Bears’ third-team defense and saw time on special teams.

As far as other local players, safety Tom Nelson, an Illinois State standout and Hersey High School product, is still on the Bears active roster. Lindeman went to Waubonsie Valley High.
