Bears name practice squad, bring back Onobun, Hurst, others

It didn’t take the Bears long at all to put together their practice squad on Sunday. It includes five players who were with the Bears during training and a quarterback and receiver.

Tight end Fendi Onobun, running back Harvey Unga, defensive lineman Aston Whiteside, linebacker Jerry Franklin and rookie cornerback Demontre Hurst will all be joining the practice squad after recently being waived. The Bears were definitely hoping that Onobun and Hurst would clear waivers.

Quarterback Jerrod Johnson and receiver Richard Lockette also will be part of the practice squad. Johnson played at Texas A&M and spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles (2011), Pittsburgh Steelers (2012) and Seattle Seahawks (2013).

A source said the Bears claimed rookie defensive David Bass off waivers. Bass, who played at Missouri Western State, was selected in the seventh round by the Oakland Raiders, but was cut.

By claiming Bass, the Bears have to make a corresponding roster move. There is one practice-squad spot remaining.
