SHARE 92-year-old woman killed in crash near Kankakee

(KANKAKEE) A 92-year-old woman was killed in a crash Saturday morning near downstate Kankakee.

A 2000 Mercury, stopped in the intersection in the 4000 block of Route 17, pulled into the intersection and was struck by a 1995 Buick at 11:30 a.m., according to Illinois State Police.

Both drivers and a passenger in the Buick were taken to nearby hospitals, police said.

The passenger in the Buick, 92-year-old Ruby Gomez of St. Anne, was pronounced dead at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood at 5:11 p.m., according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The driver of the Mercury, 24-year-old Jordan Ekhoff of Grant Park, was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, and failure to stop or yield at the intersection, police said.

The crash remains under investigation.
