Felon facing several charges after police-involved shooting

A felon is facing several new charges after he allegedly pointed his weapon at a Chicago Police officer and was shot Saturday night in the West Englewood neighborhood.

Neven Woods

Neven Woods, 23, of the 8900 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, faces two counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer with a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon on parole, possessing a firearm with a defaced serial number and being an armed habitual criminal, all felonies, according to Chicago Police.

Officers on patrol about 9 p.m. Saturday in the 7000 block of South Hermitage saw a group of males standing on a front porch drinking alcohol, police said. When officers approached, Woods ran away and officers chased him.

During the chase, he reached for a gun at his waistband, ran down an alley, and turned and pointed his weapon at an officer, police said. The officer fired at Woods, striking him, police said.

He suffered a gunshot wound to the buttocks and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in good condition, Fire Media Affairs said at the time.

No officers were injured and the suspect’s weapon was recovered at the scene, police said.

The Independent Police Review Authority continues to investigate the shooting.

Woods was ordered held on a $150,000 bond Monday, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s office. He is next scheduled to appear in court Friday.
