(GLEN ELLYN) A west suburban man broke into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment, where he beat and sexually assaulted her, according to police.

The incident happened about 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the woman’s apartment at the Irongate Apartment Complex at Roosevelt and Briar in Glen Ellyn, according to Glen Ellyn police.

The woman told police her ex forced his way into her apartment, then hit her, choked her and sexually assaulted her, a statement from police said. The woman called police after the man left.

Police found the suspect, 27-year-old Joseph G. McHale, at his home in Wheaton, where he was arrested without incident, police said.

McHale was charged with criminal sexual assault and two felony counts of domestic battery involving strangling, according to the DuPage County Sheriff’s office. He is being held in the DuPage County Jail in Wheaton on a $75,000 bond.
