A northwest suburban car dealership sustained $40,000 in damages during a fire Sunday night in Elgin.
At 7:20 p.m., firefighters responded to a fire on the roof of Biggers Chevrolet at 1385 E. Chicago St., according to a statement from the Elgin Fire Department.
Police officers arrived first and confirmed there were flames visible from the roof, according to the statement. Authorities were delayed getting inside because of security gates.
Seven additional fire departments responded to the blaze, which was brought under control in about 40 minutes. The building’s sprinkler system had activated and stopped the fire from spreading. No one was injured.
The dealership’s heating unit in the shop area, a spray booth and the roof covering all sustained damage, according to the fire department. Damages are estimated to be about $40,000.
The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.
