An elderly man died in a fire Monday in a 12-story apartment building in north suburban Waukegan.

About 5:15 p.m., crews responded to a blaze in a tenth-floor apartment in the 500 block of Washington Street, according to the Waukegan fire department.

While putting out the fire, crews found the body of the man inside the unit, officials said. The fire was confined to a single apartment.

The Lake County coroner’s office hasn’t released the man’s name.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
