92-year-old woman dies after Tri-State Tollway crash

A 92-year-old woman died after she was injured in a crash Sunday afternoon on the Tri-State Tollway in south suburban Lansing.

A 2002 Ford pulled onto the turnaround at 3:47 p.m. at the first milepost on southbound Interstate 294 and struck a 2015 Hyundai, according to Illinois State Police.

The passenger in the Ford, 92-year-old Irene Z. Gipta, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she died at 2:23 a.m. Wednesday, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Gipta, of the 2300 block of 185^th Place in Lansing, died of multiple injuries from the collision and her death was ruled an accident, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Another person was also injured the crash and taken to a hospital, police said.

The 61-year-old driver of the Ford was cited for no insurance, disobeying a traffic control device and improper lane usage, police said.
