Sox notes: Gonzalez doesn’t end White Sox’ fifth-starter debate

NEW YORK — Fives were wild for current No. 5 starter Miguel Gonzalez, who couldn’t get out of the fifth inning because of five walks.

Gonzalez left Sunday’s 7-5 loss leading 4-3 with two outs in the fifth after walking .125 hitter Dustin Ackley to put the tying run on second.

In his three starts, Gonzalez has walked 10 and allowed 19 hits over 15⅔ innings.

“The ball was moving a lot,” Gonzalez said. “Didn’t have the control today.’’

The Sox would be able to dial down their interest — which might not be all that strong anyway — in free agent Tim Lincecum if Gonzalez pitches his way into the rotation. They’re hoping it happens but are still waiting.

“Miguel was kind of hit-and-miss. It’s the first time we’ve seen him struggle with command a little bit,” manager Robin Ventura said.

Errorless streak over

The Sox were rolling along with a franchise-record 12-game errorless streak until second baseman Brett Lawrie made a wild throw to first on a Jacoby Ellsbury ground ball in the sixth inning.

After a Brett Gardner groundout, Carlos Beltran belted a Zach Duke pitch for his 400th career homer to give the Yankees a 5-4 lead.

The defense was far from crisp. Lawrie made a nice stop behind the base on Ellsbury in the first inning but first baseman Jose Abreu couldn’t catch his one-hop throw. Ellsbury scored the first run on Beltran’s sacrifice fly.

Alex Avila was called for catcher’s interference in the seventh inning for the Sox’ second error.

“It gets unfortunate when you end up losing a game, a close one,” Ventura said. “We’ll clean it up and it will get better.’’

This and that

Adam Eaton, who hit a deep shot against Masahiro Tanaka in the third inning for his second homer of the season, has hit safely (.446) in 13 of 14 career games against the Yankees.

• Sox pitchers had a 2.78 ERA in the first 32 games but a 5.26 ERA in the just-completed six-game road trip.

• Shortstop Tyler Saladino is 7-for-16 in May.

• Beltran became the fourth switch hitter to hit 400 home runs, joining Mickey Mantle, Eddie Murray and Chipper Jones.
