Oscar de la Renta’s most recent celebrity dress of the year was no doubt that of Amal Alamuddin when she wed actor George Clooney last month in Venice, Italy.
Much closer to home, de la Renta was the designer of choice for Chicago’s Oprah Winfrey for one very special evening, creating a stunning one-of-a-kind navy blue silk organza gown for her when she co-hosted the 2010 Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
De la Renta, who accompanied Oprah to the gala, described the dress’ creation (affectionately known as “the Met Dress”) in a in a Vogue magazine essay: “Lots of ruffles, lots of cleavage — a real dress for a real woman.”
Foremost, he called the dress, which took “four people more than 250 hours to complete” — “very romantic.”
