Phillips senior defensive back Jamal Brown committed to Western Michigan as a junior, but he recently changed his mind and will join teammate Dewayne Collins at Illinois State.

‘‘I had a real good relationship with Western Michigan, but when I first committed to them, I didn’t have any other options to explore,’’ Brown said. ‘‘And the coaches knew that I had just that offer, and they didn’t give me a lot of time to decide. So I basically just committed there.’’

Fast-forward to a few weeks ago, when quarterback Collins made a verbal commitment to Illinois State hours after picking up a scholarship offer. That started the wheels turning for Brown.

‘‘[Illinois State] coach Brock Spack has a really great history of getting players in the NFL,’’ Brown said. ‘‘And I got a real great vibe from Illinois State. Not that I didn’t from Western Michigan, but I feel like I can go to Illinois State and make an impact more quickly than I would at Western Michigan.’’

In the end, Illinois State was a place Brown, a 6-1, 185-pounder, couldn’t say no to.

‘‘I kept praying on it and talking to all the coaches involved and then just let the chips fall,’’ Brown said. ‘‘And I came to my final conclusion. I felt tired of sitting back on it and decided I just wanted to go with what my heart felt.’’

Twins to Dartmouth

Twin offensive linemen John and Patrick Kilcommons of Nazareth are going to play their college ball together at Dartmouth.

‘‘You can’t match the education you receive at Dartmouth, and I liked the fact that it was a smaller school because you know all your teachers and don’t get caught up in the mass lectures,’’ Patrick said.

John said he chose the Big Green for similar reasons.

‘‘The coaches were definitely a big part of the decision, as well as the academics,’’ John said. ‘‘Also, the area seemed a lot like La Grange Park, so it was easy to picture myself going there.

‘‘My favorite thing was probably the area and the campus. I really liked the dorms and stuff. It was just really different from the other Ivy League schools.’’

Borland gets offer from Badgers

Bolingbrook junior linebacker Tuf Borland added a scholarship offer from Wisconsin.

‘‘The offer kind of caught me off-guard,’’ Borland said. ‘‘[Offensive-line] coach [T.J.] Woods direct-messaged me on Twitter and asked me to give him a call. So I did, and he told me they were offering.’’

The 6-2, 225-pound Borland is one of the anchors of the Raiders’ defense. He lines up at outside linebacker, a position that likely will change in college.

‘‘I almost thought it wasn’t real for a second,’’ Borland said. ‘‘Like I said, it kind of caught me by surprise.’’

Borland is a Badgers legacy. His dad, Kyle, played for Wisconsin.

‘‘He just smiled,’’ Borland said. ‘‘I could tell he was pretty excited.’’
