Local fans of “The Amazing Race” on CBS are well aware that Hoffman Estates native Amy DeJong and her partner Maya Warren are among the final four competing teams on this season of the popular reality show that has contestants quickly trekking across the globe. That final leg of the race will air at 7 p.m. Friday on WBBM-Channel 2.

But not only are DeJong and Warren partners on the TV show, they’re also lab partners in the Ph.D program in the Food Science Department of the University of Wisconsin at Madison. The two food science students also featured in a new video, “Day in the Life of a Food Scientist,” that has been produced by the Institute of Food Technologists, as part of a series designed to educate students, teachers, media and the general public about the food science profession.
