Suit: Cab driver speeding in crash that killed Oklahoma man

A relative of an Oklahoma man who was fatally struck by a cab on the Southwest Side last year is suing the taxi company and driver.

Hanna Wieslawa Kamienski filed the suit Thursday in Cook County Circuit Court on behalf of Janusz Kamienski.

On May 27, 2013, Janusz Kamienski, 56, was crossing South Cicero Avenue near Archer Avenue about 11:30 p.m. when a cab heading south hit him, authorities said at the time. He was dead at the scene.

An autopsy found Kamienski, of Yukon, Okla., died of multiple blunt force injuries, and his death was ruled an accident, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

At the time, police said Kamienski was not crossing the street at a crosswalk, and that the driver was not cited. But the lawsuit alleges the cab driver was speeding, and that it was his responsibility to keep a lookout.

Checker Taxi Affiliation, Sun Light Taxi, Inc. and the driver were named as defendants. Neither the driver nor Checker, which operates Sun Light, could be reached for comment Thursday night.

The two-count lawsuit claims the driver and company were negligent. Hanna Wieslawa Kamienski is asking for at least $100,000 in damages.
