Gas main repaired after explosion that leveled Morgan Park home

Natural gas service has been restored to more than four dozen homes in the Far South Side Morgan Park neighborhood following an explosion that destroyed a home on Tuesday.

As of Thursday afternoon, crews have finished fixing the natural gas main in the 2100 block of West 107th Place, Peoples Gas spokeswoman Jennifer Block said. Service had been shut off to 52 customers Thursday morning to make final repairs.

Technicians went going door-to-door in the neighborhood Thursday evening to help relight appliances, and have been able to contact all but one affected customer, Block said.

Shortly before the explosion and fire, crews from the Chicago Fire Department and People’s Gas had been on the street dealing with a gas leak.

A homeowner in that block was at her teaching job Tuesday morning when the house erupted in flames and then collapsed in on itself, the Sun-Times previously reported.

The fire didn’t spread to any of the neighboring homes, firefighters said, and no people were injured. The family dog, Molly, appeared to be the only victim, a neighbor said.

A fund has been set up to help the family. People wishing to contribute can send donations in care of the Sheahan Family to the Beverly Bank & Trust at 10258 S. Western Ave., Account No. 400099295.
