THE SKINNY

Playoff-bound Warren (6-2) scored 41 points in the first quarter and hit the 50-point mark for the third time this season, crushing visiting Mundelein (1-7) in a North Suburban Lake game. The win was No. 108 for Blue Devils coach Dave Mohapp, making him the winningest coach in school history.

TURNING POINT

In the first 1:14 of the game, Warren’s Zack Rappel returned the opening kickoff 71 yards to the Mustang 14, and on the next play, Daniel Rockingham caught a 14-yard TD pass from Andrew Nickell. On Mundelein’s first play after the ensuing kickoff, it fumbled the ball away, and that led to Max Sorby’s one-yard TD run and a 14-0 lead after 74 seconds.

THE STAR

Senior return man Rappel had a monster game. In addition to the 71-yard return with the opening kickoff, he also returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown that made it 28-0 eight minutes into the game.

BY THE NUMBERS

Warren found the end zone six times in the first quarter. Mixed in there were three TD passes by Nickell (5-for-8, 86 yards in one quarter), plus three Mustang turnovers (fumble, pick-six by Nick Kokotas and botched kickoff return in which no Mustang covered the ball at their own 25).

QUOTABLE

“We wanted to get a fast start tonight and we were able to do that. We were clicking in all areas tonight — offensively, defensively and special teams. Over the last couple weeks, we have not been consistent, but with tonight’s game, it looks like we’re heading in the right direction.” — Mohapp
