(GARY, Ind.) A rolled-over semi truck forced the closure of three lanes of I-94 in northwest Indiana on Thursday morning, putting a serious damper on the morning rush.
At about 5:03 a.m., a 2001 Dodge Caravan, driven by Jerry Sumner, 47, of Griffith, Ind., was eastbound on the Borman Expy. (I-80/94) just east of the Burr Street exit in Gary, according to Indiana State Police.
Driving in the right lane, he tried to merge two lanes to the left, cutting off off a 2014 Freightliner, a statement from ISP said.
The semi, owned by Conway Freight of Richmond, Ind., was pulling two trailers loaded with 43,000 pounds of miscellaneous freight. The driver tried to swerve around the Caravan but the SUV hit the semi on the rear passenger side of the tractor, police said.
The semi then jackknifed, hitting the barrier wall on the outer shoulder, according to ISP. The semi and both trailers then rolled over on the driver’s side and came to rest blocking the two middle lanes of the expressway.
Neither driver was injured; no other vehicles were involved; and the semi did not lose its load, police said. Sumner was cited for unsafe lane movement.
The three right lanes of the Borman were closed until about 7:30 a.m.
