Lane opened some eyes last season in the Public League playoffs. The Indians managed to play with Simeon for 29 minutes, turning what most expected to be a rout into a fun game.

Several players from that Indians’ squad were back at Corliss on Sunday trying to pull it off again, but it wasn’t to be. Kenwood’s blossoming stars, juniors Nick Robinson and Zion Morgan, helped the Broncos hold off Lane for a 44-35 win.

“We didn’t underestimate them,” Robinson said. “We knew they would come out and play hard.”

The first quarter was a disaster for the Indians. Morgan was on fire, scoring 12 of his 16 points in the eight minutes and Lane point guard Noah Khan left the game with a knee injury. He never returned.

Robinson finished with 17 points and eight rebounds. He scored all 10 of Kenwood’s points in the second quarter

“I knew that for us to win I’d have to get going,” said Robinson.

Senior Simon Negash led Lane (10-14) with 12 points. Vance Rockford added eight points and six rebounds and senior Alec Krilis scored seven.

Kenwood (18-5) will play Bogan in the quarterfinals on Feb. 15 at Chicago State.
