A Southwest Side man has been charged with driving away after hitting a 3-year-old boy with his car while the boy was trick-or-treating on Halloween in Chicago Lawn, leaving the boy seriously injured.

Cody J. Sanders, 25, faces felony counts of failure to report an accident and leaving the scene of an accident involving injury, according to Chicago Police.

About 6:15 p.m. Monday, the boy was with his family crossing the street in a crosswalk in the 6500 block of West 63rd Street when he was hit. The car kept going west on 63rd and turned onto Harlem, police said.

The boy, identified by his family as Patrick Zbylut, had been trick-or-treating. He suffered brain trauma and was taken in serious condition to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, according to an online campaign started Monday night to help cover his medical costs.

Sanders, of the 6200 block of South Mulligan, also faces misdemeanor charges of failure to give information after a crash and failure to yield to a pedestrian. He was jailed on a $100,000 bond Friday and is due in court again Nov. 10, according to Cook County Circuit Court records.
