A new piece by Chicago trumpeter and composer Orbert Davis will kick off the 38th annual Chicago Jazz Festival, the city announced early Thursday.
Davis’ “Soul Migration,” commissioned by the festival to mark the centennial of the Great Migration’s launch, will be unveiled in Millennium Park on Sept. 1.
The free festival will continue with the late Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra and saxophonist Benny Golson on Sept. 2, saxophonist/clarinetist Anat Cohen and a performance of Ornette Coleman’s music by the Bad Plus on Sept. 3 and a quartet led by guitarist John Scofield and saxophonist Joe Lovano on June 4, followed by a celebration of Candido Camero’s 95th birthday featuring the Cuban percussionist himself, trombonist Steve Turre, flautist Nestor Torres and other all-stars.
The Chicago Jazz Festival is produced by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and programmed by the Jazz Institute of Chicago.
