Heriberto Martinez shot his first turkey this spring, one of 15,484 harvested in Illinois. Henry Martinez nominated his Chicago friend Heriberto for his 23-pound tom with a 3/4-inch spurs and an 11-inch beard, shot in Mercer County.

Turkey hunting in Illinois ended Thursday, with harvest up slightly from the 15,000 harvested last spring.

Turkey of the Week, the celebration of turkey hunting in the spring, runs Wednesdays on the Sun-Times outdoors page, as warranted. I am debating, this might be the last one for this spring.
