A man was killed and six others were injured in a four-vehicle crash early Saturday in the Canaryville neighborhood on the South Side.

A Mitsubishi was heading eastbound on 47th Street at 1:12 a.m. when the driver ran a red light at the intersection with Halsted and crossed over into oncoming traffic, police said. The Mitsubishi hit a Nissan Altima, causing the Altima to hit a Nissan Armada, then the Armada to hit a Honda Civic.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, 22-year-old Carlos Enrique Gonzalez, was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 1:51 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Gonzalez lived in the 6300 block of South Damen. An autopsy found he died of multiple injuries from the crash, and his death was ruled an accident.

The 26-year-old woman driving the Altima was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where her condition was stabilized, police said. Two of her passengers, a 25-year-old man and a 21-year-old man, were also taken to Mount Sinai in fair condition. A third passenger was taken to Mercy Hospital in fair condition.

Two passengers from the Armada, a 38-year-old woman and a 61-year-old woman, were taken to St. Bernard Hospital in good condition, police said. The 33-year-old man driving refused medical treatment.

The 26-year-old man driving the Honda also refused medical treatment, police said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Police Major Accidents Investigation Unit.
