Three years after Kendall Wright caught 94 balls for 1,079 yards, the Bears signed the receiver to a one-year deal hoping he can help a receiving group weakened by the loss of Alshon Jeffery.
Wright, who will receive a reported $4 million, is a 2012 first-round pick who started 41 games with the Titans — although only 13 in the last two seasons.
Wright’s best season came with Dowell Loggains, the Bears’ coordinator, running the Titans offense. Wright had more yards in two seasons with Loggains at the helm — he was promoted mid-season in 2012 — than he’s had in the three seasons since.
At 5-10, 194 pounds, Wright should compete for a slot receiver position that figures to be vacant if the Bears, as expected, cut veteran Eddie Royal.
The Bears signed Markus Wheaton, who played both slot and outside with the Steelers, to a two-year deal Friday.
“Being here, I wouldn’t want to put myself in a box and say that I’m a slot guy or outside guy,” Wheaton said Friday. “I want to do it all.”
