A person with a gunshot wound was found dead when a fire was put out early Wednesday in an unincorporated area near East Dundee in the northwest suburbs.

About 3:30 a.m., officials responded to a report of a house fire at 15N348 Richardson Drive, according to a statement from the Kane County sheriff’s office. When the fire was put out, authorities found the bodies of the the person and a dog inside the home.

The body has not been identified due to fire damage, according to a statement from the Kane County coroner’s office. An autopsy Thursday found the person had been shot, but did not rule on a preliminary cause and manner of death pending further investigation.

Detectives believe the fire was intentionally set, according to the sheriff’s office, which is investigating the incident with the Kane County Fire Investigation Task Force and the Illinois State Fire Marshal.

Detectives are investigating the incident as a suspicious death.
