A man charged with punching a woman in the face on at a North Side Red Line platform, knocking her onto the tracks, was ordered held without bond Tuesday on charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery.
Melvin Doss was on parole for a 2007 aggravated robbery conviction when, prosecutors said, he decided to relieve himself on the tracks at the Belmont Red Line stop around 4 p.m. Friday.
The woman confronted Doss, and they exchanged words, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Erin Antonietti said at a bond hearing Wednesday at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse. When she turned to walk away, Doss hit her in the head, knocking her to the tracks.
She was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Medical Center in serious condition, police said.
The woman suffered a broken hand in the fall. The altercation was captured on Chicago Transit Authority surveillance cameras, and Doss was identified by witnesses.
Judge John Fitzgerald Lyke ordered Doss held without bond, stating that the evidence cited by Antonietti was “dripping with evil” and showed a “total lack of humanity” on the part of the 46-year-old defendant.

Doss was taken into custody Tuesday at the CTA Brown Line Kimball station in the Albany Park neighborhood.
Doss, who lives in the Wicker Park neighborhood, was taken into custody about 2:05 p.m.
