Patrick Kane might be hanging up his Superman cape

It was nearly three years ago, but Patrick Kane is the reigning All-Star Game Breakaway Challenge champion. He might be going out on top.

“Maybe I’ll let some of the younger guys take over this year and back out of that one,” Kane said. “I think [Alex] Ovechkin won it a few years ago and he hasn’t been it since. Once you win it, maybe it’s one of those things where you move on. You kind of see that in a contest like that, slam-dunk contests [and] things like that. I don’t know. We’ll see.”

Ovechkin won the competition three straight times before Kane took over in 2012. Before his turn, Marian Hossa put a Superman cape and Clark Kent glasses on Kane, who dove headfirst on the ice and batted the puck to his stick with one hand, beating St. Louis’ Brian Elliott.

“Sometimes I have some bad dreams about that contest,” Kane said with a laugh. “Like I’ll go out there and not have any ideas what to do.”

Better to be lucky

The Avalanche won the Central Division last season, but advanced metrics said it was a fluke, as Colorado had an unusually high PDO, which essentially measures luck by adding shooting percentage and save percentage together. Avs coach Patrick Roy seemed to reinforce that idea, lamenting a couple of fluky goals in a 4-3 loss to Columbus on Sunday.

“We hadn’t seen goals like [those] all year last year,” Roy said. “Last year, all the bounces were on our side. Right now, the bounces seem to be the other way.”

The Avs entered Tuesday’s game in last place in the Central.

Toews rests

Jonathan Toews took the morning skate off, but will play against Colorado.

“Certain guys, whether it’s based on something bugging them or this or that, [you give them some] rest,” Joel Quenneville said. “As you go along here, you’ll notice that. We give them a lot of days off.”
