Man exchanges gunfire with robber in Wicker Park carjacking

No one was struck by gunfire and the victim has a valid FOID and concealed carry license.

A man exchanged gun shots with a would-be robber Jan. 18, 2021, in the 1300 block of North Milwaukee Avenue.

No one was hit by gunfire Monday night when a robbery victim exchanged gunfire with a gunman who tried to steal his car in Wicker Park.

The 22-year-old left his 2017 Hyundai SUV running outside of a store in the 1300 block of North Milwaukee Avenue as he went inside briefly, Chicago police said.

He returned at 11:20 p.m. and saw someone driving away in his vehicle, police said. He fired shots at the SUV, and the person inside the SUV returned fire.

The 22-year-old saw the man pull over in the 1300 block of North Milwaukee Avenue, get inside a waiting black SUV and flee the scene, police said. The Hyundai SUV was recovered.

No one was struck by gunfire, police said. The 22-year-old man has a valid FOID card and concealed carry license.

Area Five detectives are investigating.
