The Mix — Some cool things to check out this weekend in Chicago

Still haven’t locked down your plans for the weekend? Here are some suggestions sure to fill the bill:

A treasure trove of George Gershwin’s biggest hits (“Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “‘S Wonderful”) is only part of the fun in store at “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” the stage musical having its Chicagoland premiere May 5 through June 5 at Theatre at the Center, 1040 Ridge Road, Munster, Indiana. SWEDES FOR THE SWEET

The Music Box Theatre celebrates Mother’s Day with a tuneful movie about the search for a dad. Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried break out into the songs of Abba in “Mamma Mia,” screening at 2 p.m. May 8. Among the merriment at this festive screening will be a ’70s costume contest and an interactive guide for playing along with the film. Tickets: musicboxtheatre.com.

IMPROV EVERYWHERE

Up and running since Monday, the Chicago Improv Festival enters the weekend with some promising off-the-cuff performances coming on Saturday, including a live recording of the fantasy podcast “Hello From the Magic Tavern” (midnight at the Den Theater, 1333 N. Milwaukee), the musical make-’em-up “Improvised Sondheim” (8:30 p.m. at MCL Chicago, 3110 N. SUMMER IN THE CITY

It’s a sure sign that summer is arriving in Chicago when Buckingham Fountain springs to life. The “Switch on Summer!” official “lighting” of the fountain takes place at 6 p.m. May 7 at the lakefront site (301 S. Columbus). The fun also includes a “meet and greet” with Brookfield Zoo animals, free giveaways,live music courtesy of 7th Heaven and the Old Town School of Folk Music and paper lantern-making with the Chicago Children’s Museum. The fun starts at 4 p.m.

KITE FESTIVAL

Gather up the kiddies of all ages and head to Cricket Hill at Montrose Harbor (on Lake Shore Drive between Montrose and Wilson) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 7 for the annual Kids and Kites Festival. The free event again will feature the Big Kite Candy Drop (in the afternoon, weather permitting), and Kite Harbor activities area. Face painting, balloon artists and crafts are also part of the daylong festivities. One free kite kit per child will be provided if you don’t bring a kite of your own.
