Weekend roadwork on Ike to shut down lanes in city, west suburbs

Construction on the Eisenhower Expressway will cause lane closures over the weekend in the city and near west suburbs.

Starting at 11 p.m., the left lane on eastbound I-290 to Congress Parkway between Racine and Halsted will be closed until 7 a.m. Sunday, as crews build a bridge along the Halsted Street CTA Blue Line stop, according to a statement from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The two left lanes will be shut down to traffic between 1 and 7 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, IDOT officials said. Drivers will be routed to eastbound Interstate 90/94 and the Taylor Street exit ramp, south on Union to Roosevelt, turning left onto westbound I-90/94 to access Congress Parkway.

If work isn’t completed, the single left lane will close again from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday.

In Forest Park, the right lane of eastbound I-290 will be closed at Des Plaines Avenue to allow for maintenance work starting at 11 p.m. Friday, officials. The lane will stay closed through 8 a.m. Saturday.

Starting at 11 p.m. Saturday, the far left lane on the westbound side of the expressway will be closed from East Avenue to 1st Avenue so crews can complete drainage work. The lane will reopen at 8 a.m. Sunday.

Motorists should expect delays and allow extra time for trips through the area.
