Police: Person killed in head-on crash in Beach Park

A 51-year-0ld man was killed in a head-on crash Monday night in north suburban Beach Park, police said.

About 8:30 p.m., a 2002 Saturn SC was westbound on West Yorkhouse Road, just west of North Avenue in Beach Park, when the vehicle entered the eastbound lanes of traffic and struck a 2004 Dodge Ram head-on, according to a statement from the Lake County sheriff’s office.

The driver of the Saturn has been identified as Gerrit De Koning Jr. of the 13100 block of West Townline Road in unincorporated Waukegan, according to the statement. Koning was taken to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The driver of the Dodge suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
