Naperville police officers saved the life of a man who overdosed on opioids early Tuesday.

At 2 a.m., officers responded to the 1500 block of Naperville Wheaton Road in Naperville for a call of an unconscious person and found a 26-year-old man who “showed signs of a drug overdose,” according to a statement from the Naperville Police Department.

The officers administered a dose of Narcan, an antidote used to counter the effects of opioid drugs, and the man regained consciousness “almost immediately,” police said.

The Naperville Fire Department paramedics arrived and took the man to Edward Hospital in Naperville. This incident was the police department’s third Narcan save, police said.

The DuPage County Narcan Program offers Narcan training and also supplies the product for first responders. The program is credited with saving more than 100 lives since officers began administering Narcan in 2014, police said.

“Narcan has proven to be a valuable tool in our effort to preserve life in overdose cases,” Police Chief Robert Marshall said in the statement. “We will continue to partner with the community, utilizing the many programs available to educate and offer assistance to those who need it, with the goal of curbing drug abuse in our city.”
