GIF: Congressional leaders awkwardly hold hands, sway, sing

This might be the most awkward and uncomfortable GIF of congressional leaders you’ll ever see.

On Tuesday, Rep. John Boehner, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Mitch McConnell, Sen. Harry Reid, Sen. Carl Levin, Rep. Marcia Fudge and Rep. John Lewis posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold medal to Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King. The medal was awarded to mark the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

They also decided to sing “We Shall Overcome” while crossing their arms, holding hands and swaying from side to side. What sounded like a good idea turned into one incredibly awkward scene.

While Pelosi seemed somewhat upbeat, she had some fairly shifty eyes.

McConnell did his best to not sing, while maintaining a strange grin.

But the real award goes to Levin. He doesn’t look uncomfortable at all.

Wednesday morning, Pelosi was asked about everyone’s performance. Why was she smiling, while everyone looked so miserable?

“Maybe they were pulled in too tightly,” she said, while motioning with her arms.
