A teenage boy driving a stolen vehicle was killed Friday morning in a West Garfield Park neighborhood crash after allegedly driving away from an attempted traffic stop on the West Side.
Harrison District officers tried to pull over a vehicle that had been reported stolen at 9:53 a.m., according to Chicago Police. The vehicle sped off, and the officers briefly pursued before losing it. A short time later they discovered that the stolen vehicle had crashed with another vehicle at the intersection of Kinzie Street and Kilbourn Avenue.
The 16-year-old boy who was driving the stolen vehicle was taken to Loretto Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:25 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy Saturday found he died from multiple injuries suffered in a motor vehicle collision, and his death was ruled an accident. His identity has not been released.
Another boy, 16, who was a passenger in the stolen vehicle, was treated for minor injuries at Mount Sinai Hospital before being taken into custody, police said. He charged with one misdemeanor count of criminal trespass to a vehicle, police said.
The woman driving the second vehicle involved in the crash refused medical treatment at the scene, police said.
