Arturo Alvarez scored his first MLS goal since 2010 and the Chicago Fire held on to beat the Houston Dynamo 1-0 on Saturday night at Toyota Park in Bridgeview.

Alvarez poked a feed from Gilberto Souza Jr. — that slipped between a pair of defenders — past goalkeeper Tyler Deric in the third minute.

Houston’s Andrew Wenger had a pair of chances in the following moments, but came up empty each time. He dribbled into the box and cut back before firing a right-footer wide in the 6th minute and his turnaround shot from near the penalty spot sailed high in the 17th.

The last-place Fire (2-5-4) had lost three in a row and were winless in their last six matches.

Deric had a season-high six saves for the Dynamo (3-7-2).

Chicago’s Sean Johnson, making just his second start this season, finished with three saves for the clean sheet.
