A mixed bag for White Sox’ Lance Lynn with five strikeouts and four walks

The right-hander was unhappy with the walks but likes where his stuff is at through two spring starts.

Padres 4, Sox 2

Right-hander Lance Lynn was sharp with three strikeouts in the first inning, then he walked the first three Padres hitters he faced in the second. A strikeout and double play kept runs off the board.

A leadoff walk in the third hiked Lynn’s free-pass total to four. He also totaled five strikeouts, but was pulled at 60 pitches (30 strikes) after 3⅔ innings without allowing a run.

“The walks can’t happen, that has to be cleaned up,” Lynn said. “But overall stuff-wise, it’s where it needs to be. The walks will clean themselves up. I liked the shape of the curveball today, got some strikeouts on it.”

Lynn pitched two hitless innings with a walk and three strikeouts against the Giants in his first start. He has eight strikeouts in 4⅔ innings.

The Sox are 1-6-3 in Cactus League games.

Crochet ‘only’ at 98 mph

Left-hander Garrett Crochet pitched a scoreless inning, albeit without the 100 mph-plus velocity he regularly showcased making his major-league debut last September. The 21-year-old touched 98 mph and averaged 95-96.

Crochet didn’t allow a run in five appearances last season and struck out the Athletics batters he faced in Game 3 of the 2020 wild-card series before exiting with a left forearm strain.

Crochet topped out at 99 in his first spring outing Saturday. In that game, he pitched a scoreless inning with no strikeouts against the Reds. He suggested he was holding back a bit this early in camp.

Roster cuts

The first roster cuts of camp: Right-handers Danny Dopico, Kade McClure and Emilio Vargas, left-handers Jacob Lindgren, Bennett Sousa and Matt Tomshaw and catcher Carlos Perez were transferred to the minicamp.

On deck

Off day Wednesday (the only one of the spring).

Sox at Reds, 7:05 p.m. Thursday, Goodyear, Reynaldo Lopez vs. TBA.

Upcoming starters: Friday, Lucas Giolito; Saturday, Jimmy Lambert.
