A 20-year-old man is facing charges after he accidentally shot himself after burglarizing a vehicle and struggling with the victim more than a week ago in northwest suburban Elgin.
About 2:20 a.m. on April 2, officers responded to shots fired in the 500 block of Sunset Drive, according to a statement from Elgin police.
Several residents of a home on that block reported they heard a car alarm go off and when they looked outside, they saw two suspects burglarizing a vehicle, police said.
The owner of the vehicle confronted the suspects and a fight broke out, police said. The victim knew one of the suspects, 20-year-old Lewis C. McCracken, who pulled out a firearm and went inside the home.
McCracken and the victim struggled over the gun, which went off, striking McCracken, police said. He then fled the scene. The victim and the other residents were not hurt.
McCracken, of the 100 block of Josephine Drive, was taken into custody and charged with home invasion and unlawful use of a weapon, both felonies, according to police.
He was scheduled to appear in Kane County bond court Sunday morning.
