A man was shot by police Sunday night on the West Side when officers responded to a call of an armed robbery at a gas station.

At 8:52 p.m., officers were a block away when they were called to a Citgo gas station at 1001 N. Cicero Ave., said Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for Chicago Police.

Officers arrived as the robbery was taking place and saw a man attempting to rob the gas station. When they approached, the suspected robber was shot in the leg during the encounter with officers. No officers were injured.

A handgun was found at the gas station and taken as evidence, Guglielmi said.

The 27-year-old man was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, police and Fire Media Affairs said.

The shooting was being investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority, police said. The officers involved will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days.
