Woman charged with DUI for fatal Brighton Park crash

A woman has been charged with DUI for a crash that killed a man Tuesday night in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

Tania A. Reyna has been charged with one felony count each of reckless homicide with a motor vehicle, and aggravated DUI for an accident causing death for the crash near 44th and California, according to Chicago Police. She lives in the 1800 block of West 35th Street.

About 11:45 p.m., Reyna was driving south on California Avenue when she disobeyed a stop sign and struck a vehicle heading east on 44th Street, according to police.

The eastbound vehicle then struck two poles, and debris from the crash broke a storefront window. The 28-year-old man driving the second vehicle, Carlos De Lourdes, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:52 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 4400 block of South Western.

After the initial crash, Reyna’s vehicle continued southbound on California and struck a parked car, knocking it onto the sidewalk and into two buildings, police said. Her vehicle then struck another parked car, which was pushed into a third parked car. Reyna’s vehicle then finally came to rest.

She was taken to Stroger Hospital, where her condition was stabilized, police said.

In addition to the felonies, Reyna was charged with a misdemeanor count of DUI, and cited for disobeying a red circular steady signal stop, failure to stop at a stop sign, failure to reduce speed and failure to stay in a lane, police said.
