Gov. Pat Quinn running mate Paul Vallas during a Tribune Editorial Board meeting on Tuesday walked back a comment he made last week that Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner was too rich to be governor.
“I think his wealth basically drives his policy. He measures his success by wealth. The point that I made was that Mr. Rauner defines his success as: ‘I made money,” Vallas said. “He so reduced services that he has a hundred-plus lawsuits in his long term care facilities. He’s always says ‘I’ve been a success in everything I’ve done.’ Why? By what definition — ‘because I’ve created wealth.’ I also made the second point that I believe his wealth guides his strategy.”
Pressed again on the question, Vallas then answered directly: “No, no one’s too rich to be governor.”
