(BATAVIA) A fire in an apartment building in west suburban Batavia on Monday caused $75,000 worth of damage and left one firefighter with a minor injury.

Crews found flames and black smoke coming from the three-story building in the 900 block of Lorlyn Circle when they responded about 2:45 p.m., according to a statement from the Batavia Fire Department.

Investigators later determined the flames started on the third floor balcony from discarded smoking materials, fire officials said.

The fire ultimately caused extensive damage to the roof, and a third-floor apartment sustained smoke and water damage, officials said. All residents of the apartment got out safe thanks to a working smoke detector.

A firefighter suffered a minor injury, but no one else was hurt, officials said.

The fire caused roughly $70,000 in damage to the building, and $5,000 in damage to its contents.
