Police: Man caught breaking into Elgin home

(ELGIN) A man has been charged with breaking into a home in northwest suburban Elgin on Sunday evening.

Police were called to a burglary in progress at 4:50 p.m. at a home in the 600 block from South Liberty, according to Elgin police.

The glass of the home’s back door had been shattered and officers saw a man running away, a statement from police said. He was arrested after a brief chase and an unspecified amount of allegedly stolen items were recovered.

Robert L. Croom, 50, of the 600 block of Varsity in Elgin, faces a felony count of residential burglary and a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest, police said.

A judge set Croom’s bond at $80,000 on Monday morning. His next court date wasn’t immediately known.
