An off-duty police officer was grazed by a bullet early Friday outside a bar in Gary, Indiana.

The officer went to eat at Shaw’s in the 1100 block of Virginia Street when, about 3 a.m., someone ran into the bar and said people outside were shooting, according to Gary Police Department Sgt. Thomas Decanter.

The officer and another off-duty officer ran outside and while they were talking to people, someone leaned out of an SUV that was sitting in the parking lot and opened fire, Decanter said.

The officer suffered a graze wound to his left side and the other officer returned fire while the SUV sped away eastbound, Decanter said.

He was taken to Methodists Hospital in Gary, where he was treated and released, Decanter said.

No one has been charged in connection with the shooting while Gary police investigate.
