Fire goalkeeper for Saturday a mystery

Who will be the Fire starting goalkeeper Saturday night against the Montreal Impact? Stay tuned.

Coach Frank Yallop didn’t answer Monday when asked whether Sean Johnson or Jon Busch would play against Frank Klopas’ team. The question arose after Yallop started Busch on Friday in Columbus, even though Johnson could have played with a jammed finger.

“None of your business,” Yallop joked when asked who would start. “You know when you’ll find out? Saturday.”

Johnson has dealt with a myriad of minor injuries and has also missed time with the national team, leading to performances that have been below his standard. Busch, whose appearance Friday was his 300th in MLS, was brought in at the start of training camp to back up Johnson but is a known commodity and could start if needed.

STAYING HOME

If she wanted to, Elena Delle Donne could spend the Sky’s offseason overseas making big money in a foreign league. After her first two WNBA seasons, Delle Donne has chosen to stay home and resist a big payday.

On Wednesday, she indicated her mind hasn’t changed.

Delle Donne hosted a Twitter Q&A and was asked if she wanted to play in the Italian women’s basketball league. She responded “At this time going overseas isn’t something I’m interested in. I like to enjoy my offseason w/ my fam.”

The Sky lost 76-67 to Los Angeles in a preseason game in Uncasville, Connecticut.

STILL KICKING

The Red Stars lost eight players to World Cup duty – including four to the United States national team – but that hasn’t stopped them from taking control of the National Women’s Soccer League.

Defender Taryn Hemmings scored in the 82nd minute to give the Red Stars a 2-1 win Saturday over defending champion FC Kansas City. With the victory, the Red Stars remained the league’s only unbeaten team and improved to 4-0-2, four points ahead of second-place Washington.
